Despite their rather limited discography of yet, Negative Plane are one of the very best US black metal bands out there, with a fresh take on all the classic sounds of the genre's past, from Bethlehem to Mayhem, from Hellhammer to Mercyful Fate to Venom and even Necrophagia. Though Et in Saecula Saeculorum is their sole album to date, it is superior to what many of their contemporaries have accomplished even after long careers. For this former Florida act, atmosphere and songwriting are the two critical components. Nameless Void has an excellent vocal style which crashes and collides off through the resonant, dark melodies and sinister drumming, and he is not afraid to dowse the already menacing tones with added effects to make them even more cavernous or carnivorous...like some high priest to an Elder God, invoking the formless shapes of nightmare into our reality.

Belgium’s Possession are moving from strength to hideous strength. They began precociously with their 2013 demo (His Best Deceit), took forward steps with their 2014 EP (Anneliese — reviewed here), and have made even more progress with their second EP, 1585-1646. Equal parts morbidly atmospheric and rifftastically raging, it’s an unholy union of black, death, and thrash metal that’s well worth adding to your musical arsenal. The four songs on the EP are conceptually linked. As in the case of Anneliese, the band have taken as their subject matter the true story of a young woman who lost her life at the hands of religious zealots. Here, the misfortune befell a French woman named Adrienne D’Heur; the EP is named for the years of her life. According to The Font of All Human Knowledge, she was arrested by the French Inquisition, tortured in an effort to compel her into confessing that she had entered into a pact with the Devil (she refused to confess), and was then burned to death.

Sepulchral Temple’s self-titled debut EP was originally unleashed on 12” vinyl by Iron Bonehead Productions last year but is poised to raise its ugly head from the catacombs once more with a CD release via Dublin’s Invictus Productions on 24th November 2014. Sepulchral Temple is a three piece hailing from the UK that plays deep, cavernous, sepulchral death metal along the lines of Sheol, Cruciamentum, Incantation and Grave Miasma. There are four tracks which you could whittle down to two as each main track also features a brief outro. This is powerful, crushing, and highly authentic death metal that belies the fact it’s also a debut. It’s a release that most definitely deserves a listen and leaves the listener craving more from the band. This type of Death Metal has recently been experiencing its most productive phase in decades but it’s a case of the more the better provided they can all deliver death metal to this very high standard. Brilliant.

It’s strange to think that not all that long ago, death metal and black metal seemed like two forces in diametric opposition. Both movements revolutionized “metal”, with the first wave of death pushing technicality, grotesque imagery, and the least commercial aspects of thrash to their limits. Meanwhile, the second wave of black metal, inspired by Hellhammer, early Mercyful Fate, and Venom (as well as English anarcho-punk like Discharge and Crass) eschewed Guitar Grimoire shredding techniques in favor of sonic chaos and nihilistic screeds against humanity. Now that bands like Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Immortal, and Darkthrone have either moved on to reunions, “classics” acts, or entirely different entities altogether, thank the Elder Gods that bands like Ireland’s ZOM, claiming the mantle of “blackened death metal,” have eschewed that early tribalism to effortlessly meld the technicality and brutality of death with the fury of black metal on their first full-length, 'Flesh Assimilation'.

Few bands can match Malthusian’s meteoric yet justified rise to prominence within death metals underground. Malthusian’s music has its root’s firmly planted in cavernous death metal but they combine it with doom, black metal and other elements to create an infectious, all-encompassing, claustrophobic type of hate-filled, venomous death. Below the Hengiform features three tracks – The Gasless Billows, Slouching Equinox and Forms Become Vapour. I have no problem whatsoever with the production on their demo but on this Malthusian have managed to achieve bigger and better production without losing any of the sinister atmosphere from their debut. This is a release that requires very little description – it destroys from start to finish - it’s really as simple as that and you’d be a fool not to snap it up on its release.

Antiversum are from Zurich, Switzerland. Band’s members are also involved in numerous other projects, with names such as Blakk Old Blood, Deathcult, Asag, Goatfukk, none of which I’m familiar with — yet. The comparisons with Bölzer are inevitable, both because of the bands’ shared nationality and also because of certain similarities of style. The music is highly atmospheric black/death, with the band churning out a dense, poisonous fog of morbid riffs driven by attention-grabbing drum-and-cymbal assaults. The vibrating haze of sulfurous murk generated by the riffs is cold, hostile, and malignant, and the eerie cosmic melodies suggest that this impenetrable haze is populated with alien entities.

Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork (Digipack CD) €12.90
Diabolical Masquerade was the solo-project created by Katatonia's Anders "Blakkheim" Nyström in 1996, to let off more creative steam away from the gothic/doom metal styling of Katatonia. Diabolical Masquerade was based primarily around symphonic/melodic black metal; creating eerie atmospheres through keyboards and utilizing more high energy & technical compositions than those of his main band, with complex patterns of riffs and hooks.
This particular album saw a greater prominence of synths than ever before, to convey strong horror-related themes. To further expand this atmosphere, cello and flute were also incorporated.
"Nightwork" was the third album by Diabolical Masquerade. It was recorded at The Sanctuary in April 1998 and saw a release later that year. The album was produced by Dan Swanö and Blakkheim.
Although a solo-project, Blakkheim enlisted the help of Dan Swanö to perform the drums, as well as contributing with some keyboards and backing vocals to this album. Diabolical Masquerade released 4 albums in total, before Blakkheim laid the project to rest in 2004.

The band was formed in 1994 by Aldrahn (Thorns) and Vicotnik (Ved Buens Ende). The early incarnation was that of a raw and melodic black metal band, with their debut album also featuring Fenriz of Darkthrone on bass.
The band quickly evolved, and by Dødheimsgard's third album, "666 International", Vicotnik had taken over a lot of the writing duties, with DHG's style becoming more technical yet ferocious black metal, with strong experimental ideas and industrial elements. Vicotnik's riffs were inspired by cult bands such as Thorns, and perfectly entwined with Aldrahn?s delightfully twisted lyrics and immense vocals to create something truly unique. In its "666 International" incarnation, DHG as they were later to be known featured a line-up of well-respected Norwegian musicians including Czral (Aura Noir, Ved Buens Ends, Virus), Apollyon (Aura Noir, Immortal), plus Mr Magic Logic (Fleurety) on keyboards, as the album was constructed over a period of time. All in all "666 International" is rightly regarded as a highly influential masterpiece of avant-garde metal by many since its release in 1999.

Enslaved was formed by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson in 1991, & are based in Bergen, Norway. Ivar & Grutle had previously played together in the death metal band, Phobia. Taking a different route to many of the extreme metal Norwegian bands of the early 90's, Enslaved embraced their Viking history & culture, composing ferocious epics of extreme metal combined with hypnotic riffs & repetitious structures; Enslaved even becoming signed to Euronymous' Deathlike Silence label early in their career.
'Yggdrasill' was the band's second demo (following 1991's feet-finding 'Nema'), showing a young band with great passion & creativity. The songs were understandably raw & contained some traits of the Norwegian wave of black metal sweeping the region at the time, along with their own individual touch. Although more focused on Viking/Norwegian lore than anything satanic, Enslaved's signature sound still captured the magic of the genre with long, hypnotic compositions losing the listener within their vast sonic landscapes.
Over the years, the band has integrated strong elements of progressive music into their compositions & Enslaved has gone on to worldwide notoriety for their stunning live shows & accomplished blend of atmospherics & sumptuous, powerful riffs, receiving numerous accolades along the way, including Norwegian Grammys. This was followed by the debut full-length album, the classic ‘All the Witches Dance’ in 1994.
‘Buried in Time’ was released in 2004 & was the Italian group’s fourth album. Keeping with the dark ambience of their previous efforts whilst venturing into what could be deemed more accessible territory with clearer production values, ‘Buried in Time’ was still a metallic tour de force of thrashing yet melodic riffing. The album was recorded and mixed at Alpha Omega Studio, Como (Italy) during the summer of 2004

However, this venture proved to be cut short following his death, forcing Mysticum to look elsewhere for the release of their eventual debut album, 'In the Streams of Inferno', finally surfacing in 1996.
A perfect concoction of cold, primitive black metal & forward-thinking ideas from an act unafraid to push boundaries, the hell of 'In the Streams of Inferno' has had a lasting & profound impact on many since 1996. For this release, the album has now had some extensive remastering work courtesy of Tom Kvålsvoll at Strype Studios in Oslo to give a better representation of the sound the band initially intended, & includes 2 bonus songs. Ophthalamia - A Journey in Darkness (CD)€12.90
This Swedish band was formed in 1989 by IT, mainly known for his dark band Abruptum, (which was signed to DSP, the label of ex-Mayhem guitarist Euronymous) and his heavy presence in the Scandinavian black metal scene in the late 80's & early 90's.
Opthalamia was a land of pure fantasy created by IT and the songs are connected to stories based around this fantasy-world. The original vocalist of the band was All (also in Abruptum), but he was then replaced by Shadow (Jon Nödtveidt of classic death/black metal band, Dissection). Shadow handled vocals this album, the band's debut album, originally released in 1994.
Though the band could be classified as black metal, there is much more to Opthalamia, with varied metal influences, tempo changes and melodic passages becoming progressively more prominent, helping to distinguish them from their peers. The album was produced by the legendary Dan Swano (Opeth, Katatonia, etc) & Opthalamia at Unisound in 1993.

Ok so it's 2008 and what we have here is the tyrants of German Black Metal Absurd releasing a very impressive collection of re-recordings of some of their best cuts from the crypt coinciding with their 15 year anniversary.
The sound quality here is very impressive, high fidelity, and easily makes this the best sounding Absurd release to date. However, I would like to say that whenever a band goes back and re-records classic songs with new quality they run the risk of draining the atmospheric charm of the original. Absurd have given some of those old classic songs a new lease of life that's exciting, but as a long time fan I can't help but prefer certain songs in their original form.

Forgotten Horror - Aeon of the Shadow Goddess

 

 

FORGOTTEN HORROR, a black / death metal act from Kuopio, Finland, was formed in January 2004 by Tuomas Karhunen (Deathchain, Jess and the Ancient Ones, True Black Dawn). The debut album "THE SERPENT CREATION" was released by WOODCUT RECORDS in September 2011, receiving a good response from the media (4/5 Terrorizer etc.).
In the spring of 2015 Forgotten Horror is ready to unleash their sophomore Lilithian summoning through Woodcut Records. The new full-length album is entitled "AEON OF THE SHADOW GODDESS" and it will be released on Walpurgis Night MMXV, followed by an album release gig in Kuopio with the Finnish cult band Demilich.
"Aeon of the Shadow Goddess" shows the band's evolved, unique style and diverse songwriting, being a leap forward on the acausal path of Lilithian Black Metal!

The band's frontman Tuomas Karhunen speaks:
"Making this Babalon's Beast of an album has been an extremely long process during which the material has matured a lot. As Forgotten Horror walks hand in hand with my own personal and spiritual growth, this dark alchemical process has required me to turn my life completely upside down, to step back and re-evaluate everything regarding music and my personal life. When it comes to songwriting, there are a lot of new elements and layers and everything is more dynamic than before.
With "Aeon of the Shadow Goddess" I set out to create an album that I could stand behind wholeheartedly; an album I gave my absolute everything for, and in that I have succeeded. I've poured my heart soul into this work of devotion towards the Queen of Souls, the beauteous Daughter of Sunset. The only currently available new track, the advance version of BEHOLD A SHADOW GODDESS is a good introduction for things to come and establishes the atmosphere nicely, but it doesn't do just to the album in its entirety. We'll put another song or two available soon so you can get an idea of this full-length's diversity.
After a hiatus we're also returning to the gig front with some fresh blood in our ranks. We'll start the conquering of stages with an album release gig at Henry's Pub, Kuopio (Finland) in May 2, 2015 together with the mighty cult of DEMILICH.
